1916年，内蒙古鄂尔多斯草原上，阴风怒号，大雪纷飞，王府送葬的行列行进在积雪的丘陵间。王爷和福晋为了最后消灭革命的“独贵龙”运动，以王爷“有病”找人替王爷升天为借口，阴谋杀害老一代“独贵龙”运动的领袖敖其尔。敖其尔的儿子——十七八岁的乌力记闻讯纵马赶来，可是没有来得及见父亲一面，敖其尔已惨遭杀害。乌力记誓死要报杀父之仇，老牧民巴彦尔告诉他，好汉报仇，十年不晚！乌力记埋下这刻骨的仇恨，默默地忍受着非人的劳役折磨。
